Pieces are cut to sensible playing proportions with bases that stand stably and a weight that sits well in the hand; the board is finished flat and true so pieces slide rather than rock; and the two stones are chosen for contrast that reads instantly in normal room light, which is the practical definition of a usable set. That they are also beautiful on a table between games is the material doing its usual work rather than the purpose. If your intent is display-dominant, a larger-scale set for a library table, say, the same designs scale up on the drawing; state the intent and the proportions follow it.

Normal play, pieces meeting on captures, tipping onto the board, is well within the material’s tolerance; the vulnerable event is a fall from table height onto a hard floor, where a delicate detail (a knight’s ear, a cross finial) can chip exactly as any carved material would. The honest mitigations are built in and behavioural: pieces are proportioned without needlessly fragile projections, bases are weighted so accidental tipping stays on the board, and storage between games in the set’s tray or box keeps travel safe. If a chip ever happens, carved stone repairs well, colour-matched filling and re-finishing restore a piece, so a mishap is a repair, not a bereavement.

Yes, the pairing is the set’s character, and it is yours to specify. The requirements are practical: enough tonal contrast to read the game at a glance (a pale stone against a dark or strongly coloured one), and two stones whose working properties both suit small carved forms, we will steer you off a pairing that fails either test. Classic pairings run pale travertine or white marble against Nero Marquina or a deep green; subtler schemes (two close tones) look elegant photographed and frustrating played, and we say so. As thirty-three separate stone objects, which is exactly how the packing treats it. Each piece nests in fitted protection so nothing contacts anything else in transit; the board, the single largest and most vulnerable component, is faced, edge-padded and braced in its own layer; and the whole set travels in one compact export carton or crate sized to survive courier and freight handling.
